The adapter goes on once and stays on your bike. After that, fitting the basket takes about a second. You need one Phillips screwdriver and roughly five minutes.
Check these three things first
Where each one is on the bike
- Handlebar, up to 1.2 in (3.2 cm)Measure the bar where the adapter will sit, just beside the stem.
- The stemThe fifth screw goes down into it. Threadless stems with a top cap are fine.
- 12 in (30 cm) clearanceTop of the front tire to the underside of the bar.
- Flat barsA straight or slightly swept section for the clamp. Drop bars have none.
Three bikes it fits
The adapter, and the two shims
This is the only part that stays on your bike. Handlebars come in three common widths, so two rubber shims are in the box. Fit one if your bar is narrower than the widest size, otherwise the clamp will not grip. If you are using a shim, read the next section before you ride.
If your handlebars are under 1.2 in, read this first
This is the most common thing that goes wrong with this basket, and it has nothing to do with how heavy your pet is. Buyers report it with dogs as light as 4.5 lb.
The basket sits forward of the handlebar, so its weight is always trying to twist the bracket downward around the bar. Friction is the only thing resisting that. On a full 1.2 in bar the clamp grips the bar itself and holds. On a thinner bar it grips a rubber shim instead, and a shim held in by pressure alone can walk out under vibration. Once it does, the gap opens, the bracket rotates, and the basket tilts down toward the front tire.
The fix, and it takes five minutes
- Build the bar up instead of packing it out. Self-fusing silicone tape, sold as self-amalgamating or rescue tape, about $5 a roll in any hardware store. Wrap it round the bar where the clamp will sit until the bar measures a full 1.2 in, then clamp straight onto that. It bonds to itself into one continuous rubber sleeve, so there is nothing left that can work loose, and it grips far better than a smooth shim. A strip cut from an old inner tube does the same job for nothing.
- Fit the fifth screw, the one that goes down into the stem. That screw is what actually stops the bracket rotating, and it is the one people skip. If your bike has no stem to take it, the clamp is doing all the work on its own.
- Push down on the empty basket before every ride. Press the front of it. If the bracket shifts at all, tighten it before your pet goes anywhere near it. This takes two seconds and it is the whole check.
We have not tested this on every handlebar, and we would rather say so. If it will not hold on yours, email us and we will refund you. Please do not keep riding with a basket that moves.
Fitting it, step by step
Attach
Open the adapter and close it round the handlebar, with the mounting plate facing forward over the front wheel. Add a shim first if your bar is under 1.2 in. Tighten the four screws evenly, then the fifth screw underneath, down into the stem.
The fifth screw is the one people skip. It is what stops the basket rocking.
Click
Line the basket up with the adapter and lower it until it seats, then push the switch across to lock it.
If you did not hear it click, it is not seated. Lift it off and try again before you ride.
Go
Clip the safety tether to your pet's harness, never to their collar. Cinch the drawstring top gently if they are a climber. To take the basket off later, push the switch back and lift. The adapter stays where it is.
